My portal project is supposed to take the form of a Victorian house, as seen by the pillars and roof style. The media that I used within this piece, titled "Escape to a New Reality," is pencil and colored pencil. The styles that I used were balance and emphasis, seen by the symmetry of the house as well as the use of color only within the portal. My own thoughts inspired my artwork because I always want to go beyond every day life and be in a place that can't be expressed in words. My goals as an artist are to make pieces that touch people emotionally. I'm not sure if this can help me achieve that goal because you'd really have to understand my purpose for this art before realizing the bigger meaning. I learned through this art that I'm not very good with paint and I need to be better at it because colored pencil doesn't work too well. I need to get better with paint because colored pencil isn't cutting it.

Portal ProjectIn this project we were asked to create a portal through the means of architecture and make it symbolize something unique. For my project I decided to create a Victorian house style with the portal at the front door going into space. Once my project was finished, I realized that my house looked very clean and symmetrical. However, I felt that the portal itself did not look very intriguing. I feel that if I used paint for the portal it would have turned out a lot better, but I'm not very skilled with paint and I thought it would mess up my piece.
Mega 1x1sFor this project I kind of messed up at first because I didn't realize that we had to make an overall theme so I had to redo them. My 1x1s were supposed to show the artwork of a child on a bulletin board, as seen by the title and format. Overall, I feel that the style I was using to create my final piece worked pretty well. Besides the fact that I didn't know there needed to be a fluent theme throughout, I feel that my project turned out fairly good and the format created a message reflecting my own past.
Plastic Fantastic ProjectMy group and I got the idea to do a Batman themed plastic fantastic from the Captain America one in the lobby and the fact that all of us think Batman looks awesome. I feel that it was much more creative than simply doing a body structure made of clear plastic. Getting supplies and building the structure was difficult in this project. Building him took A LOT of a tape which we sort of didn't see coming but finished it in the end. The main structure was built and then was wrapped around by black tape with red tape for detail and connecting the joints. Overall, I feel that the plastic fantastic came out very well, but we could not get him to stand on his own without falling over or his knees giving out.
Clay Mask ProjectMy mask was meant to reflect ancient North African culture where they worshipped cats as sacred and god-like, thus reflecting the reason for my piece. It's design was based off of the masks that some of the Pharoahs and higher-ups in society used. My experiences with clay have never been great, but I feel like this piece was better than most I've created before. I love the luster and the color of the glaze I used, however some of it bled into each other which gave it a weird look. I also ran into the problem of the different shaped eyes. I didn't realize they weren't identical until it was too late to fix them. I tried but they never seemed to end up identical. Overall, however, I feel like this is one of my better pieces of art during this year and I feel that I am improving on my clay sculpting.
Environment Self-PortraitWhen I first got my environment, I knew what background I wanted to do from the beginning. Behind me are mountains and cracked ice with a pond in the center. The hardest part of the project was getting the snow and ice to look white without actually being white because it wouldn't show up on the paper. Once I found out I could make the portrait abstract I then came up with the idea of making my face into ice with edges and curves around my face. This was done to further show that my environment was arctic. I'm not the best when it comes to self portraits so being able to make my painting abstract was very beneficial to me. The different colors in my face were supposed to look like reflected light and angled ice. I tried to make my hair look like it was frozen at the tips but it didn't turn out too well. I also tried to make my clothing as close to animal fur as I could get it but I didn't know exactly how to give it that texture. Overall I don't think I did bad on this project considering self portraits aren't the easiest thing for me.
Polygon Portrait
For this project I incorporated some of the skills I had learned in past art classes like collage and contrast. I feel like this project was creative on my part. I used magazine ads for all of my face and then created the background by cutting both white and black paper and alternating them. The analogous color scheme that I used was blue, green, and blue-green. This worked well in my mind because they are very familiar colors and don't stand out too much from each other. My portrait says that I am creative and love nature. All of my portrait was either cutouts of the sky, water, or grass/trees. If I could redo this project I would probably change my color scheme. Although it is reflective of who I am, many other people were doing this color scheme so it wasn't as creative as I would've hoped it would be. Though I've said this, in the end it turned out pretty well in my opinion so that's good. Silhouette ProjectFor this project I incorporated where I want to be in 10 years by showing the world and different places in the world because I want to be traveling around the world in 10 years. I feel like I wouldn't have actually lived my life yet unless I'm out there exploring the world and seeing different cultures. I did this project by cutting out my silhouette and placing two layers of pictures in there, one from Tokyo and one from Europe. The background of my project really reflects my aspiration because it is the surface of the world and it's vastness. I don't want to die without seeing the world and that's why I have based my project on it.
I Create Original Art During the clay tile project we were told to create a tile based on a biome and then paint the tile. I did my project on a beetle in a jungle biome. My project turned out better than I thought it was going to be. Although I had a reference it was only for the structure of a beetle. The biome around it was something I created. I put the log facing diagonally in the middle and hollowed it out. I stuffed newspaper in it to make it keep its form which really helped. The overlapping leaves were a good idea in my eyes because it gave the clay piece a 3-D aspect to it. I Develop My Art Making Skills I had used clay before prior to this class. In middle school I made a miniature room from clay. It had three walls and a floor with like a mini TV and chair and stuff. So yeah I have had experience with clay before. Although I had prior experience when working with clay I did develop new skills with it. I really didn't know that you needed to hollow things out when they are too big. That helped in my piece considering that I had a huge log in the middle also it helped to stuff news paper in there to keep its shape. Besides the main log in the clay the rest of the sculpture was pretty easy to form and I think it turned out well in the end. We Collaborate During my clay tile project I was a little skeptical. I kept thinking that it wasn't that good and I should work on it more. I asked the people sitting around me what they thought and they said it was good, but it still didn't seem right to me. The more I worked on it the worse it got so I decided to take their advice and just leave it as it was. When I added the paint to the tile the same thing was happening but I was a little more cautious once I started to paint and it came out better than I thought. |
